A successful collaboration that started in 2016 with Charlie Rayner of Inveresk Tavern and the Migrant Resource Centre Northern Tasmania, the Community Kitchen has expanded over the past two years. 2018 marks its third year, and will provide nine MRC North community groups the opportunity to take turns cooking traditional foods each Sunday, as the local pub hands over its kitchen to local migrant cooks.
The vision of the Community Kitchen is to create opportunities for new migrants and to:
- help people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds feel welcome, form relationships and integrate into the local community;
- provide them with broader social and support networks;
- raise cross-cultural awareness in the community; and
- provide an opportunity for the groups to raise funds for their community’s activities.
The first Community Kitchen opened 3 July 2016.
Last year, ABC News featured cooks from the Bhutanese Kirat/Buddhist Association at Community Kitchen on 18 June 2017, coinciding with the launch of Refugee Week. Watch the video and read the feature article at ABC News: www.abc.net.au
