MRC North provides support programs dedicated to children and families, primarily through our weekly Multicultural Playgroup. Other child- and family-focused events will be listed on our News & Events page.
MRC North has run the Multicultural Playgroup since 2007, and supports families with children under the age of five.
Parenting in a new country with different norms and laws can raise many challenges.
The Multicultural Playgroup aims to: support families to access resources and services; assist families to address family relationship issues and conflict, and to develop their confidence as parents in a new country; and develop bicultural links to help foster community capacity to mentor and support their own communities.
Funded through Communities for Children, the Multicultural Playgroup operates at the Haig Community Space, with weekly sessions covering the following:
- Session activities include painting, building blocks, books and creative activities,
- Guest speakers include a child health nurse, dietician and dentist,
- Excursions to local resources, such as the library and museums, that provide families with access to affordable ‘child friendly’ activities.
The program services on average over 40-50 families annually, with families most recently from Afghanistan, Burma, Bhutan, and Sudan.
