MRC Overview
The Migrant Resource Centre (Northern Tasmania) Inc. was first incorporated on the 26th August 1982 under the Tasmanian Associations Incorporation Act 1964. Established to facilitate the effective settlement of migrants and refugees living in the northern regions of the state (0363 & 0364 telephone area codes), the Centre is a non-profit community organisation and is endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office as a charitable institution under the Income Tax Assessment Act. The Migrant Resource Centre has an honorary Management Committee consisting of 11 elected community members and 3 government representatives.
The Centre is funded by non-recurrent grants from the Commonwealth Department of Immigration and Citizenship, and the Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. It also obtains funding from other government sources to deliver a range of services to assist migrants and refugees to become effective members of the community.
OUR PURPOSE
- To provide poverty support to migrant and humanitarian entrant families suffering financial crisis, destitution, misfortune, helplessness and sickness;
- To provide and support culturally appropriate counselling, health, trauma and settlement services to migrant and humanitarian entrants;
- To promote an increased awareness of the special needs of migrants and humanitarian entrants amongst service providers and within the general community;
- To develop and deliver specific programs and services including educational programs to address the settlement needs of migrant and humanitarian entrants where there are identified service gaps within the context of each local community's needs;
- To assist in the provision of facilities to local ethnic groups with special needs, such as women, youth, elderly and people with disabilities;
- To promote a greater appreciation of the cultural background of migrant and humanitarian entrants among the local community and the development of culturally appropriate policies and practices in organisations;
- To facilitate the planning and co-ordination of services for newly arrived and established migrant and humanitarian entrant communities in Tasmania, in consultation with other agencies and with recognition of the different planning and co-ordination mechanisms that exist in Tasmania;
- To promote the human rights of all migrants, humanitarian entrants and asylum seekers in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (United Nations General Assembly, 1948).
There are a total of 23 staff members, full time and part time, working for the Migrant Resource Centre (Northern Tasmania) Inc. and another 15 staff members, including casual staff, at the MRC Community Child Care Centre in Mowbray.
