The You’re Welcome program is funded by the Department of State Growth through Skills Tasmania. Over the past year it has provided 39 participants with hospitality training and work experience.
The program has attracted participants who have recently arrived into Launceston and those who have been in the State for some years. Participants are from Burma, Eritrea, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Bulgaria, China, India, Philippines, West Africa, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Iran, Afghanistan and Nepal. All participants gained a Certificate I in Hospitality after studying Hygienic Practices for Food Safety, Espresso Coffee, Safe Work Practices, Working Effectively with Others, Provide Customer Information and Responsible Service of Alcohol.
Feedback from the participants demonstrated their enjoyment of the program that gave them a choice of experiencing work either back of house (kitchen operations, housekeeping) or front of house (waiting, bar, bottle shop and restaurant). In addition to the hospitality training all participants completed career pathway planning that increased their job search and job readiness skills.
The participants have also undertaken additional courses including First Aid and I’m Alert Food Safety with 32% going on to further study or training in Certificate II in Kitchen Operations, Certificate III in Food and Beverage plus Housekeeping and Hospitality Essentials skill sets.
Work placements have generously been provided by Earthy Eats, Country Club Tasmania, Victoria’s Café, Turkish Tukka, Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston, Burlington Berries, Prestige Tours and the Launceston General Hospital. The Inveresk Tavern has been utilised extensively as a training venue throughout the courses. The hotel’s working environment provided the participants with opportunities to interact and connect with customers while improving their newly acquired practical skills.
There have been positive outcomes from the You’re Welcome program during the past year with 51% of participants gaining employment.
