Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) – Client Services

The previous Settlement Grants program, which had been in place for ten years, has been replaced by the new SETS program. SETS is funded by the Department of Home Affairs.

The SETS program supports individuals, families and communities who have been in Australia for less than five years to address their settlement needs and to build the skills to participate in Australia’s economic and social life.

Specifically the program is provided for humanitarian entrants, some family stream migrants, the dependants of skilled migrants in rural areas and some residents on temporary visas also living in rural areas. The type of support is extremely varied as it is provided on an as needs basis. Advice, information and referral are provided in Launceston or over the phone. Needs can be related to acquiring English, employment and job readiness activities, education, housing, health and wellbeing, transport, interpreting documents, form filling, civic participation and justice.

The SETS team is comprised of experienced staff members who are social workers and bi-cultural workers. Staff members speak a number of languages between them including Nepali, Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Amharic and Tigrinya. On site and phone interpreting is used for other languages.
